WANDERERS legend Tommy Banks was the guest of honour at a special fundraising evening at Farnworth Cricket Club last Friday night.
Farnworth’s finest celebrated his 92nd birthday last November and is battling against dementia, his diagnosis being confirmed by the family in March.
Since then, Tommy’s wife, Rita, has set about raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society. And last week a number of former Wanderers including Roy Greaves, John Thomas and Alex Smith joined friends at Bridgeman Park for an evening of entertainment which has boosted the money raised to £6,199 at time of writing.
One of the top auction prizes was a signed replica 1958 FA Cup shirt which had been donated by Tommy to one of his favourite restaurants in Florida 20 years ago. The winning bidder was local businessman, and close family friend, Martin Axford.
Donations can still be made via Farnworth CC’s JustGiving page.
