ONE of Bolton’s most popular secondary schools is looking to install a fence around its playing field after a spate of anti-social incidents– including drinking, littering and dog fouling.
Turton School in Bromley Cross has put forward the proposals after people are coming on to the playing fields, including off-road bikers and horse riders.
Broken glass has also been found on the fields used by children.
Headteacher Sam Gorse said the issue is one of safeguarding.
If plans are approved, metal fencing could be put up around the field.
Canon Slade’s new security measures after bikers put staff and children 'at risk'
Ms Gorse said: “We’ve had problems there with dog poo, people letting their dogs poo there and not cleaning it up.
“This isn’t just a recent thing, this has been going on for some years now and we’ve not definitely decided on the fence yet, this is just one idea for keeping children safe.”
She added: “There have been a lot of positive responses because obviously it’s for the safety of the children.
“Everybody should be safe while they’re playing sports.”
Last year security fencing was been installed at one of Bolton’s outstanding schools after staff and pupils were put at risk by off-road bikers coming on to the grounds.
Canon Slade School in Bradshaw was given a slice of £434million from the Government’s condition improvement fund to improve safeguarding and reduce anti-social behaviour last year.
The same funding will be used to secure Turton School grounds Some members of the community said it was a “a shame” to see Turton School playing fields fenced off, while others felt is essential to safeguarding the welfare of pupils.
Ms Gorse will be holding a meeting alongside the school’s human resources manager on Wednesday May 18 with people who have responded to the consultation.
The final decision about the fence will be taken after this meeting.
