ROAD works will get underway on a major junction in Bolton from next week, lasting seven months.

'Vital redevelopment' works will be carried out to create a right signal turn from Moss Bank Way to Blackburn Road, into to town.

The works will affect the junction of Blackburn Rd / Crompton Way / Moss Bank Way.

Cllr John Walsh – who represents Astley Bridge – says that this is something that he has been pushing with Transport for Greater Manchester and the council, for years.

He insists that the disruption will be as minimal as possible, and the ‘very busy junction’ will be open at all times, which will keep traffic flowing.

He added: “The right turn doesn’t exist, and there is no safeguard for traffic.

“This will improve the safety and help ease traffic flow, as well as safety at the pedestrian crossing.

“I am delighted that work will be starting at last.

“Although there will be some disruption, it needs to repaired long term.

“We will ensure minimal disruption and keep the very busy junction open at all times, to keep the traffic flowing.”

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “The scheme is a junction improvement at the junction of Blackburn Rd / Crompton Way / Moss Bank Way. It will involve alterations to the junction arrangement and the provision of a dedicated left turn lane from Moss Bank Way onto Blackburn Road.

“The aim of the scheme is to reduce congestion and improve safety at the junction and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The scheme value is £1.0m and is funded by the GM Growth Deal Fund.

“Works will start w/c 18th April and will be completed in October 2022.

"The roads will remain open during the works but lane closures may be in place during certain periods.”

There will also be a left lane created for traffic turning left from Moss Bank Way to Blackburn Road, and Belmont Road.

Some of the redevelopment work will also involve levelling out the road, which is thought to create a ‘much better junction’.

The car park will also be closed near Blackburn Road and Moss Bank Way.

Some of the roads expected to be affected include Blackrod Road, Crompton Way, Moss Bank Way, and Ashworth Lane.
