A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has made history by winning a competition to have his design on a logo on the first rockets launching satellites from the UK this year.
Callum Wilkinson, from Bolton, won the prestigious Logo Lift Off opportunity out of 10,000 primary school children and will now see his design launched into space.
His design shows a satellite flying over the earth, with ideas on what the satellite could be used for, including tracking the weather.
The UK is set to become the first country in Europe to host small satellite launches this year, as set out in the National Space Strategy.
Callum said: “My design shows orbits made of string and has pictures on to show what the satellites are going to be used for.
“I went on the internet and learnt loads of things about satellites and climate change and then the idea just burst into my brain, and I planned it out on the computer before making it.
“I feel very proud of myself and really, really on top of the world!”
Callum will be invited to visit the first launch from the UK and will receive a goody bag, a framed certificate.
A picture of his designed artwork on the rocket and a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) learning kit.
His parents, Amanda and Neil Wilkinson are proud of Callum.
Amanda said: “We are incredibly proud of him and never expected this to happen.
“It was just something we did in the February half term to give him something to do.
“He loves space and has his whole bedroom themed in stars and planets hanging down from the ceiling.
“He designed it all on the compute first, googling all about satellites and using string to show the orbit – this was hard to do.”
The project by the UK Space Agency is in collaboration with Hopscotch Consulting to help inspire the next generation to consider a career in the space sector and will help create more jobs in the space industry.
It gives them an opportunity to learn how satellite data is helping to tackle global challenges such as climate change.
Blackrod Primary School, where Callum attends, said: “Amazing things happen when you just give it a go.”
The UK’s first small satellite launch is set to take place from Spaceport Cornwall later this year, followed by vertical launches from Scotland.
Thirteen other entries were crowned regional winners.
