This week’s beery highlight came courtesy of Bridgehouse Brewery, from o’er t’border in Yorkshire. The brewhouse being situated between Keighley and Bingley.
Bridgehouse is a traditional, old school brewer of cask ales, having operated open top fermenters in their brewing process since its inception in 2010.
Their porter style ale, which was sampled earlier in the week, was a delightful drinking experience.
The beer presented itself dark chestnut in colour. It had very pleasant aromas of dark chocolate, bready malt and soft, caramel sweetness.
The flavours were more complex than you would normally expect for the style. I identified a fine balance of chocolate, caramel, dark, stone fruits and a subtle, tangy cola note. A blend that was quite smooth and richly flavoured, in this 4.5% beverage.
The finish was exceptional. A lingering smooth taste of vinous fruit, dark chocolate, spicy warmth and soft caramel sweetness. A most memorable, complex and luscious flavoured porter.
