BOLTON’S Hindu community set out to ‘break down bias’ this year in a special event attended by more than 100 people from diverse backgrounds.

The Bolton Hindu Forum’s celebrations this week were part of International Women’s Day this year, with a theme of ‘Breaking the bias’ in society.

The event was opened by Cllr Susan Baines, Executive Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing.

Leader of the council, Martyn Cox, and Cllrs Anne Greenhalgh; Mudasir Dean; and Michael Baines; also shared their thoughts and visions on how people from all walks of life, should work together towards an inclusive town.

They also paid homage to the positive and remarkable contributions that women, throughout history, have made within the world.

Dr Sunita Thomson, a trustee and the lead for this project on behalf of Bolton Hindu Forum, said: “The success of this event exceeded all expectations.

“It was heart-warming to see the support and enthusiasm of our Bolton family, in the celebration of International Women's Day.

“A special thank you to Bolton at Home for their sponsorship and to all those who attended, making this event such a huge success."

The forum's objective was to encourage cohesion in the community and make this celebration accessible to all.

Sunita added: “Sponsorship from Bolton at Home, made this possible.

“This was an event for the community, and everybody came together.

“It was really touching.

“The cohesion of the community and the diversity was wonderful to see.”

Over 100 people from diverse backgrounds registered on the day for the event, where they enjoyed refreshments, and shared information and informative presentations.

The keynote speaker, Dr Harni Bharaj, deputy director at Royal Bolton Hospital, spoke about empowering each other to screen for diabetes.

Other speakers gave guidance on health and well-being, facilitated meditation exercises, and inspired confidence, by sharing positive experiences of women achieving in the field of business.

The event, hosted and organised by the forum also, provided a space for charities and organisations such as Healthwatch Bolton; Community Champions; Asian Elders; Macmillan Cancer Support; Diabetes screening; The Woodland Trust; and many more, to interact with the public and discuss their services.
