Leigh RMI 3 Vauxhall Motors 1
FORMER Liverpool striker Mark Smyth struck twice to give Leigh their first win in 17 league games against fellow strugglers Vauxhall.
The Railwaymen are still propping up the division, but the three points gave them a much-needed boost in Blue Square North.
"It was a great win for us," said manager Steve Bleasdale. "Not winning is confidence-draining for the manager and the team, but we looked strong and looked the better team. They only had a couple of long-range shots.
"Smyth was my first signing and he has delivered with the goals."
RMI's central defence was bolstered by the arrival of Marsh Evans from Chester and loan signing Luke Prosser from Port Vale.
Smyth scored in the 15th and 57th minute before Gavin Salmon made it three. The visitors pulled a goal back through Tom Field three minutes later from the penalty spot.
RMI have released striker Michael Oates and defender Stephen Hill.
Bill Taylor has stood down as chairman of RMI after six years in the office. He will continue on the committee.
