RESIDENTS on a road plagued by excessive traffic say something must be done before a serious accident occurs.

People living in Dearden Street, Little Lever, say a major Lever Gardens complex project will worsen traffic conditions on what is already a notorious cut-through.

They say that four cars have been damaged recently but still nothing has been done, despite a recent visit by councillors.

The Lever Gardens development will see 62 flats for older people built on land around Dearden Street and Lever Street.

Resident Joanne Mutch said: “They have no intentions of doing anything until the development is done. I said it’s going to take someone being hurt or killed before they do anything.”

Cllr David Evans says the authorities must respond to local views.

He said: “When a resident comes to a councillor, a councillor has to react, that’s why you’re elected.”

He added: “My frustration is that we’ve gone right round the houses and now we’re right back where we started.”

Cllr Sean Hornby, who also represents Little Lever, says other measures should be considered.

He said: “We looked at making it one-way five years ago but consultation said no.

“If you make it one way the traffic can go faster.

“We’re going to go back to consultation but we can’t do that until Lever Gardens is finished.

“As you come out of Dearden Street onto Church Street the vehicles skid badly so we’re going to put an anti-skid pad on there.

He added: “If you made it one-way then in theory they’d be creating more traffic on Lever Street.

“That junction that I referred to where the anti-skid pad is needed, the garden wall has been hit and knocked down on one of the houses.”
