VETERANS in Bolton have been busy transforming an abandoned centre, thanks to Bolton Council.

The Armed Forces Centre 4 Veterans were previously using a centre on Moor Lane, but they had to move premises due to it being demolished.

The new centre next to the Victory Reform Club on Chorley Road, is being designed to create a safe space for veterans and help them lead a new living on 'Civvy Street'

Cait Smith, who served in Royal Signals, and Scott Hawtrey who was in the Royal Engineers, both started the centre in 2016.

Cait said: “There is a real need for a place like this, that is ran by veterans for veterans.

“They don’t have any trust with anyone else, or talk to others because they feel no one understands them, so this really helps them.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community and supporting those who find it difficult after coming back from Afghanistan.

“The council have been really helpful, and Cllr Andy Morgan has been brilliant.”

Barry Pickard joined the service in 2017 after being homeless, and struggling with alcohol.

He has since transformed his life, and is a trustee of the organisation.

Building and contents related damage company, Heightvale, have donated building materials, as well as helping with the plumbing and flooring.

The new centre is bigger than meaning there is extra space for a private office area, which also includes a kitchen as well.

Cllr Andy Morgan, Bolton Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “Bolton Council is committed to supporting members of the armed forces and veterans.

“The Armed Forces Covenant is built on partnerships with groups like Bolton Armed Forces Centre 4 Veterans which does outstanding work in the community.

“We are pleased to have supported them by providing their previous home at Ashburner Street, financial support to move, and the new premises.

“We wish them the best of luck in their new home.”

The organisation rely on donations and grants, which is ran by volunteers.

The new centre has been decorated by veterans from Bancroft House Healthier Heroes.

Once complete, the centre will offer a range of support and activities for veterans, including an arts and craft area.

It is expected to open next week, which will be officially opened by Mayor Linda Thomas and Cllr Morgan.
