MOTORISTS are facing huge delays after work started to repair a water leak on a busy Bolton junction - prompting highway bosses to issue a warning to motorists.
Bolton Council warned last week that United Utilities were carrying out emergency work on Crompton Way and urged drivers to make alternative arrangements by 'planning their journeys in advance'.
Today, Transport for Greater Manchester said the repair work was causing delays 'in all directions' and to check with bus operators for 'affected services'.
The work is taking place at the junction of Crompton Way and Tonge Moor Road.
There is no estimation of how long the work will take.
Work is taking place at the crossing point west of the the junction of Crompton Way and Tonge Moor Road.
The westbound side of Crompton Way will be closed for the duration of the project.
Diversions will be in place, with updates provided regularly.
An end date for the work has not been confirmed as this will depend on the size of the leak and the complexity of the required repairs.
Officers from Bolton Council will be monitoring the work and will provide updates as it progresses.
Drivers planning to travel westward along Crompton Way towards Blackburn Road are instead urged to use the diversion routes along Tonge Moor Road, Turton Street and Kay Street.
One motorist said: "The traffic on Crompton Way has been horrific. Queues of cars either side, nobody could even go left or right anywhere else because of the massive delay, The diversions are busy too, there was no quicker way to get to where I had to be. People were trying to turn back and causing more issues because there was nowhere to go."
A spokesman for Bolton Council said:"Bolton Council would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while these necessary repairs are completed."
