A RIDING group in Horwich has launched a campaign to encourage people to get on their bikes throughout January and February.

Horwich Ride Social’s campaign, aims to help boost people’s mental and physical health through cycling.

Everyone is encouraged to have a go, whatever ability they are at.

And the rides are all free, with everyone also receiving a small cycling gift.

Michelle Tonge, who set up the group with her husband Antony, said: “This is a great opportunity for everyone to have a go and get out and about.

“This includes those who may not feel confident and have wanted to do it before.

“It’s hard work, but we try to keep it fun, and don’t take ourselves too seriously.

“The two hours are just your two hours where you can just be who you want to be.”

The group launched in late 2018 as the Breeze Horwich Club, after becoming a champion for the British Cycling programme the year before.

Michelle added: “I didn’t think it would grow so quickly in such a short period of time.

“It started with just myself and four other ladies, and now there are 15 of us.”

Michelle said that one of the main benefits is that it helps keep people fit while socialising, and the fact that it is exercise is all but forgotten.

The weather also doesn’t put a stop to classes, unless there is good reason.

There are a range of classes available, including women’s groups, male groups, and mixed groups, as well as themed rides too.

Bike maintenance courses are also available, and someone will be there to assist anyone who might feel worried at first.

The campaign has been supported by Horwich Council, who donated a small amount of funding.

The volunteer led group have also been successful in their bid with Cycle UK for their Big Bike Revival campaign taking place in March, encouraging women to ride, particularly those from ethnic minorities.

Anyone interested in getting involved doesn’t have to be a member, and can either hire a bike for £5 or bring their own.

More information can be found at www.letsride.co.uk, where people can select the group, and sign up for the most suitable ride.
