AN electrical issue sparked a full scale evacuation of Blackpool Tower this morning, fire bosses have confirmed.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene late morning, with scores of people inside being told to leave the tower.

Pictures taken by photographer Danny Crompton capture the drama as emergency investigated reports of smoke at the base of the tower, which reaches 158 m, with people told to leave the tower waiting on the promenade.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “Six fire engines from Blackpool, Bispham, South Shore and Fleetwood, along with an aerial ladder platform from Preston, were called to a reports of smoke at the base of Blackpool Tower.

“There was a full evacuation and following an investigation, firefighters identified the cause of smoke as being an electrical issue in the basement of a neighbouring property.

“No injuries have been reported.”

Scheduled to take place at the Tower Ballroom was a dance masterclass followed by a show.
