A NEW public square has been pledged for Ramsbottom as a masterplan is unveiled.
Plans for a new enterprise centre, with Market Chambers and the unused upper floors of the Civic Hall being considered, are under review.
Council bosses in Bury say the market town has become a shopping and tourism mecca in recent years.
But with the high street facing grave challenges, a masterplan has been drafted to support traders and visitors.
Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, council leader, said: “Ramsbottom has developed into an attractive visitor destination, supported by the East Lancs Railway, a high-quality restaurant scene, independent retailers, a popular annual events programme and a growing reputation as one of the best places to live in the region.
“But it is not immune from the challenges that town centres across the country have faced, with the decline of the high street and the ravages of Covid.
“We need a plan which will enable the town centre to adapt to the changes so Ramsbottom can continue to be an appealing place to visit and a great place to live and work.”
Pedestrianised areas and improved car parking are also being consulted upon.
