A COMMUNITY group is holding an event tonight to round off Black History Month.
Several events, including a virtual discussion with ex-Bolton Wanderers players Roger Walker and Tendai Chiswala about their experiences of playing football as black men in the 80s, have already taken place.
The finale has been organised by Tili Tonse Community Arts and Training group with the Bolton Black History Organising Committee.
Organisers have arranged an evening of culture, gospel music and speeches at the Holiday Inn on Higher Bridge Street.
Mandy Jelenje, a co-ordinator, said: “We are really excited about the celebratory event. It will bring the black community groups and the Bolton family together. The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, will be the guest of honour.
“A number of officers from Bolton Council, Housing Associations, Royal Bolton Hospital and other agencies will also be joining the Bolton community to celebrate an evening of culture, music and African cuisine.”
The two main themes of the event are Making Black History Matter and Keeping Everyone Safe in Bolton. With this focus, organisers have decided to present awards to individuals who have worked hard to keep Bolton safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Helen Wall, who leads Bolton’s Covid-19 vaccination programme, will receive an award for her crucial role in protecting people across the borough.
Bolton Council of Mosques (BCOM) is also set to receive an award for allowing professionals to use their site for Covid testing and vaccinations.
There will also be awards presented to inspirational, young black people who have have carried out incredible work in the community.
Paralympian Ola Abidogun, who took home a bronze medal in the London 2012 paralympics, will also be given an award.
Invited guests will enjoy entertaining performances from a comedian, as well as delicious African cuisine.
