Give us some history about the pub:
The Cross Guns is one of the oldest pubs in Bolton, dating back to the late 1700s. It was brewery owned for many years until it was purchased in 2017 by the current owners and completely refurbished. Fast forward to May, 2021, and Jon joined the team as the new general manager. Once again, the property was completely overhauled with improvements including an outdoor dining area and bar, open plan kitchen and the addition of an art deco cocktail bar.
Is food served? If so what’s on the menu?
Of course and it’s been highly commended by food critics. We’re proud to offer a comprehensive menu ranging from updated pub classics like home-made scotch egg, to seasonal based offerings like pigeon and venison. Vegetarians are well catered for!
Is there a beer garden?
ABSOLUTELY. A beautiful beer garden with its own bar, was built this year. We put a lot of effort into making the area feel spacious and green and it’s a crowd-puller. As winter draws-in, punters are still enjoying the area due to the log-burner and we’re installing a fully retractable roof in early November.
Most popular drink served is:
Manager Jon loves a good glass of wine and our extensive, bespoke wine list reflects this and caters to everyone’s taste. Jon enjoys recommending a wine to complement your food – his current favourite pairing is Marius Chapoutier Vermentino with the Monkfish. If wine’s not your thing, we’ve got a wide range of lagers, ciders and local ales on tap. In the cocktail bar, particular favourites are the Champagne Mojito and Twisted Bellinis.
Most memorable moment at the pub:
The first night we opened under new management. The whole team worked seamlessly together and it was just amazing to see all our hard work pay off.
Do you have an entertainment line-up?
We’re gradually building our offering here. At the moment this is mainly acoustic nights but check out our website for the most up-to-date line-up.
Have you faced any challenges within the industry?
Who hasn’t recently? Our original opening got pushed back two weeks when a staff member tested positive for COVID. Even though it was only one person, we wanted to start on the right footing, and decided to wait two weeks in case of any in-contacts.
The best thing about running a pub is...
The team camaraderie and the satisfaction in knowing we are providing a service appreciated by our customers.
The worst thing about running a pub is...
The very long hours – which is why you’ve got to really love it!
The perfect hangover cure is...
Our Cross Guns Beefburger with crispy shallots, grilled cheese and truffle mayo, washed down with a Bloody Mary and two pickled onions… or a fag and a coffee 😁
