A CAMPAIGN to install a pedestrian crossing outside a school is a step closer to reaching fruition.

Parents and residents have raised concerns about speed of traffic and parking issues on The Hoskers in Westhoughton, near St George’s CE Primary School.

Now councillors have had meetings with Bolton Council’s highways engineers to take plans for a crossing forward.

Cllr Deirdre McGeown said: “Myself and Cllr Wilkinson have been pushing for some time for a crossing outside St George’s school because parents have contacted us with real concerns.”

Cllr David Wilkinson said he has been in contact with highway engineers to look at a particular spot where the crossing should be.

He said: “We’ve had a meeting with one of the highway engineers from Bolton Council to look at this particular spot outside the school.

“It is probably the best for a crossing. We have asked for a detailed scheme of costings for electricity supply, tactile paving etcetera.

“Once that scheme is signed off and myself and Cllr McGeown have approved that, it can be funded through the Westhoughton South Area Forum budget.

“It will have to be approved by Bolton Council and an executive member there before it can actually be built.”

Parents have raised concerns about the speed which people drive on The Hoskers while other shared their concerns about different schools in the area, asking for crossings to also be implemented outside others The proposal of a new crossing will have to be signed off before it can be installed but Cllr Wilkinson and Cllr McGeown say it is “good news for people who want a crossing at St George’s School.”
