RESIDENTS have launched a petition to stop a new school from being built on a popular playing field.

Plans for a new multi-million pound primary school have moved a step closer now backers have earmarked land off Captains Clough Road, off Moss Bank Way as a possible site for the £7m development.

But neighbours have concerns about the new school and have drafted a petition.

Kath Tomlins, one local resident, contacted The Bolton News to express her anger that the playing fields were being considered for the scheme.

She said: “I’m writing to vent my absolute disgust and utter disbelief about the proposed school being built on Captains Clough Road playing field.

"Whoever thought this could be a good idea is obviously living on another planet. This field has been part of the local community for years and is used by so many people, including the local football team.

“The traffic is already horrendous as Church Road school is close, as well as traffic going to other schools nearby. In all honesty where is the increase in traffic going to go, the roads close by can’t cope.

“This lovely area isn’t designed to have a building in the middle of it all. There are other places I’m sure which can be used."

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “We want to reassure residents that these proposals are only at an early stage, and it will be some time before more detailed plans are put forward.

“Any plan would of course be subject to a public consultation and the full planning process, giving residents the opportunity to raise any concerns about traffic or other issues.

“Whichever location is chosen for a new school, both the council and the academy trust are committed to working with the community and providing facilities that local residents could use.

“There is a projected need for additional school places in the area and the council has a duty to provide a place for every child.”
