AN intrepid fundraiser is hoping to finish a gruelling three-week challenge this week when he completes his 22nd marathon in 22 days throughout May.
Rowan Ardill, 33, set himself the target of running the distance every day from May 1, and will cover over 575 miles - more than the distance between Glasgow and Paris - by the time he reaches his finish line on Saturday, May 22.
Rowan’s fundraising feat will raise money for The Running Charity, which uses sport and activity as a vehicle to help young homeless people, with the Ramsbottom runner setting his sights on a total figure of £22,000.
Setting himself a new route every day, each with a slight twist, Rowan has so far completed the 26.2 mile marathon distance on canal towpaths, Lancashire’s hills, Bury Athletic Club’s running track, Ramsbottom’s Nuttall Park, the Kirklees Trail, Preston’s Guild Wheel and around Bolton’s famous three reservoirs.
Rowan also completed a special football-themed marathon taking in Stockport County’s Edgerley Park and Bury AFC’s home at Stainton Park.
He often runs with a litter picker, clearing rubbish from the lanes and hedgerows as he goes.
“It’s been such a big task, so big in fact that it’s important to break it down into daily milestones and key distances throughout a day,” said Rowan, who is chairman of Ramsbottom Running Club. “I focus on reaching 12km first, then switch to miles and look to the half-marathon distance, before re-focusing on the 16 mile mark, as I know there’s less than 10 miles to go.
“It’s been tough on mind, body and soul, but it’s also been so enjoyable. I find it’s important to keep a sense of humour and to always make light of the dark moments. That’s really helped me keep pushing on.”
Rowan has even been joined by fellow running enthusiasts, keen to join in and help support him on his epic journey.
“The support has been absolutely incredible throughout,” he added. “I’m delighted to be able to play my part in making a difference to a vital charity.”
