A twin strike in the first six minutes by Mark Smyth set up a first league win for Steve Bleasdale.
The manager has been winless in the Blue Square North since he took the reins at Hilton Park eight games ago, but Smyth put bottom-of-the-table Leigh on the way to victory.
New signing Ryan Walker, a former Walsall striker, was instrumental in both goals. The first came from a Walker flick-on after two minutes and he provided the pass for Smyth to grab his second with an exceptional volley.
The Cumbrians pulled a goal back seven minutes from time through Craig Johnston, but the Railwaymen never looked in danger of throwing away the valuable three points.
