TODAY is April Fool’s Day when pranks are played and tricks tried out.

In the past it was also a day when Bolton News photographers could indulge their imaginations and create some striking spoof images which would appear in that day’s paper alongside a story which seemed too unlikely to be believed - or was it?

Here we reproduce pictures from four different April Fool’s Day stories.

The photo of Tonge Moor Road supporting a story that trams were to be replaced by steam trains is particularly impressive given that it was done in the days long before Photoshop and was a bit of dark room trickery.
