EMILY Jones was a little girl who loved to help others and so, soon after she was killed, her mum, Sarah Barnes, started a GoFundMe page in her memory to raise cash for Bolton Lads and Girls Club.
It is to be the schoolgirl’s legacy and, to date, has raised more than £27,000.
Sarah’s connection with the club, which provides a safe and inspiring space for young people to spend spare time, began when the solicitor’s firm she works for sponsored an event.
She was so impressed with the work they do that, afterwards, she volunteered to act as a mentor.
“She mentored one of the young lads there and really, really enjoyed it,” said Emily’s dad, Mark Jones.
“It was an amazing thing to do and she just kept it to herself.”
After Emily’s death, Sarah decided that the club should be a worthy recipient of the generosity of family, friends and members of the public who were keen to find a way of expressing their sympathy and condolences by donating.
Mark, who agreed with the decision, says the fund, and the messages of support written on the GoFundMe page by people who have donated, have meant a great deal, especially those from people in Bolton.
“There was an outpouring from people of Bolton and it was just fantastic,” said a thankful Mark.
“The community has been amazing.”
