Bolton's war on fly-tipping: Campaign for a greener town

We love our town and we’re proud to call Bolton our home ­— but like you we get frustrated when fly-tippers dump rubbish in our backstreets and at our beauty spots.

A lot of good work is already done ­to tackle litter and fly-tipping ­— from the courts cracking down on offenders to volunteers and workers keeping the town centre clean and tidy.

But still the problem of fly-tipping persists ­— and it became more prevalent during last year’s coronavirus lockdowns.

So we are calling for three key actions:

• Tougher penalties for the worst fly-tipping offenders
   
• Plans for green spaces and ‘pocket parks’ to progress
   
• Finally we want YOU to join up our Big Bolton Litter Pick by joining a local group or starting your own rubbish-busting team

For our part, we will:

• Champion those groups already doing great work to keep our neighbourhoods clean
   
• Name and shame fly-tipping offenders fined by the courts
   
• Support town hall chiefs and local businesses as everyone does their best to recover in 2021

And if you need help starting your own group, we’ll help you do that too.

This year is crucial for Bolton and there are many exciting plans to transform the town ­— and so a clean and tidy environment is vital for shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs to thrive.

And a £6.25m project is already in the works, which would create a greener town centre, seeing footpaths and connections between key institutions improved and new public spaces created.

The scheme is part of a £25m plan to for major improvements to the town’s big attractions ­­— including Bolton Market, the library and aquarium ­— as well as the creation of pocket parks and the opening of a new innovation hub for growing and start-up businesses.

We want to see Prime Minister Boris Johnson stick to his word and ‘level up’ ­— by supporting our town’s ambitious plans.

And we want Metro Mayor Andy Burnham to make sure Bolton gets its fair share of local funds too.
