A PRIMARY school's care for its pupils extends outside the school gates.

Pikes Lane Primary School in Deane has been making up much needed food parcels to support families in need during what has been a challenging year because of covid.

Staff and businesses have donated to the food parcels.

Rachel Burke, the extended services and pupil welfare at the school organised the initiative.

She said: "We always want to support our families in any way we can.

"This year has been really difficult and some of our families have struggled more than usual. We wanted to ensure that all of our community can enjoy the holidays so we set up a food parcel service that all families from Pikes Lane Primary School can access.

"Altogether, 45 families asked for support. We have been working hard to get as many food donations as possible and with many thanks to the staff, local community, Morrisons, Asda and The Trussel Trust, we have been able to put together the food parcels.

"Parents have been collecting their parcels over the last couple of days and are very grateful for the help from school."
