Bolton now has the highest coronavirus infection rate anywhere in the country.
The new sharp rises shows the rolling seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 in Bolton and the rest of the UK.
Bolton has now surpassed the highest with 462 new cases recorded in the seven days to September 7 – the equivalent of 160.7 per 100,000 people - higher than Leicester at its peak.
This is the highest rate in England and it is up sharply from 80.0 in the seven days to August 31.
Bolton Council’s director of public health, Dr Helen Lowey, said: “This is a steep and worrying increase but it will take a while for the new rules to take effect.
“Part of the reason for the increase is because we have been doing additional testing – and it is not unexpected that with more testing we will find more cases.
“We also know that the virus is being spread when people meet and socialise. Which is why now more than ever, we need everyone to be stringent on following the rules.
“Stay apart from people, and do not mix with anyone from outside your household or bubble.
“Otherwise we will face even more restrictions and that is the last thing we want. But will be left with no choice if the rate continues to increase.
“Remember the importance of washing hands regularly, maintaining distance and getting a test if you have symptoms.
“Help us to reduce the rate, and play your part.”
Council chiefs have urged Bolton residents to take responsibility to bring down the rate of coronavirus infections after an "extraordinary" spike in cases.
Cllr David Greenhalgh urged people to follow the new guidelines to get back to "some kind of normality" after the government introduced new restrictions with immediate effect on Tuesday afternoon.
The figures, for the seven days to September 7, are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.
The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.
Blackburn with Darwen (80.2) up from 44.1, Burnley 77.6 up from 32.6 and Hyndburn (74) up from 23.4 occupy eight, ninth and 10 places on the list.
Birmingham has the second highest rate, up from 32.0 to 85.4 with 975 new cases.
Preston is in third place, where the rate has risen from 35.6 to 85.2, with 122 new cases.
The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 10 on the Government’s coronavirus online dashboard.
Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 7; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 7; rate of new cases in the seven days to August 31; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to August 31.
