DRIVERS who ignored a full lane closure indicated by a large red X can expect a letter through the post, police said.

Traffic police said that 62 drivers drove straight under the sign after it had been activated due to a broken down wagon.

The breakdown happened during Friday's evening rush hour on the M60 junction 17, Whitefield.

Officers say that its patrol had been sat in a "fully liveried police vehicle" 100 yards prior to the red X sign.

Posting on Twitter, GMP Traffic stated: " To the 62 drivers who drove past his vehicle and went under the red X, paperwork will be on it's way to you shortly, video evidence available."

Drivers who ignore lane closures on motorways marked with a red X will face a £100 fine and three penalty points.

Motorists who see a red X above a lane should move into another lane as soon as they can.
