A MUM has been put off sweetcorn after opening a tin to find the contents mouldy.

Zahra Naiem, 25, bought cans of the Freshona Sweetcorn from Lidl on Derby Street on January 9.

She was in for a nasty surprise when she opened the tin on January 21 while making a fusion lasagne with one of her foster children, as the entire contents appeared to be covered in mould.

Miss Naiem said: ""It took them five days to get back to me and they just send a voucher in the post – they just didn't seem to be that bothered.

"Consider the brand is called Freshona, it's obviously not very fresh.

"I will not even touch a tin of sweetcorn now. I stopped cooking as soon as I opened the can and the smell was just awful, thinking about it is making me sick.

"It really put me off, I couldn't even grab another can to put any sweetcorn in, and I didn't want my lasagne after that."

"If that's how that one is what are the others like? There must be some more out there like that, the sell by date was 2021 and the tin was fully secured with no damage or dints in it."

Miss Naiem, who has five children living with her, was unhappy with Lidl's response to her complaint, as there was no mention of any action being taken.

She was offered a full refund, and £10 of shopping vouchers to the German discount supermarket, but wanted more assurance that no one else would be opening mouldy corn.

A spokesman for Lidl said: "We were very sorry to hear of this matter, as it is never our intention for a customer to be dissatisfied.

"We'd like to reassure the customer that following contact with our Customer Services team, this matter was immediately escalated to our Quality Assurance department, who raised it with the supplier and confirmed that this was an isolated case.

"At Lidl, we only ever work with reputable accredited suppliers who have strict controls and procedures in place to ensure that our products meet the high standards demanded by us and by our customers.

"We'd like to apologise, therefore, that that this was not the case on this occasion."
