THUGS ripped the head of a silhouette soldier off in a park on Monday night.

The statue was put in place at Atherton Central Park last year as part of commemorative preparations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"Tommy" soldiers were positioned in public places around the country and the monument at the Hamilton Street park cost more than £250.

It was paid for by community group Friends of Atherton Parks, which funded it as part of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Atherton councillor Jamie Hodgkinson said: "It’s really disheartening that someone would want to snap a memorial to honour our residents who gave there tomorrow for our today.

"This has really upset and angered residents who appreciate the work the volunteers do in the park to improve the area we live or all ages to enjoy.

"I would like to thank residents who have contacted me to help or donate to hopefully repair it and get it back in the park."
