YOUNGSTERS in Bolton have absolutely no excuse to be bored this summer thanks to the amazing array of activities laid on by Bolton Lads and Girls Club.

The Spa Road club has organised a series of themed weeks throughout the whole school holidays.

It began with Explorers Week, which included a Bushtucker Trial involving the children eating actual crickets.

This week there’s been a marvellously magical element with all things Harry Potter. A visiting magician, wand-making workshops, potion creating and even a game of Quidditch - using lacrosse equipment - were just some of the highlights.

With so much on offer, it’s no surprise that around 120 youngsters are flocking there each day.

“They’re really enjoying it, running around, and being with friends,” said spokesman Deb Connolly. “Quite a few of them don’t want to go home at the end of the day,” she laughed.

Lined-up for future weeks, the themes are silly science, superheroes and villains, under the sea and circus.

“Apart from having great fun, the children are learning and developing lots of skills such as communication, hygiene and safety, co-operation, sport and agility, and healthy living,” said Deb.

As part of each of the weeks, the club has also organised a day trip out which connects with the themes.

For instance, during silly science season there will be an outing to Eureka, the children's science activity centre in Halifax.

And during under the sea week, the eight to 12-year-olds will be off to Sale Water Park.

"The whole scheme has really captured their imaginations and they are totally engaged," said Deb.

There are still some places available. Prices are £10, 8am to 6pm, which includes breakfast, lunch and snacks, or £8, 12pm to 6pm, which includes lunch and snacks.
