A MAN in his mid-20s has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a bridge. 

Emergency services were called to A666 St Peter's Way, just after 12pm.

It followed reports of concerns for the welfare of a man. 

An ambulance, air ambulance and rapid response vehicle attended and a man, in his mid-20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called at 12.01pm following concerns for the welfare of a man on St Peter's Way. 

"It appears that a man has fallen from a bridge. 

"He suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital".

Police also closed off part of the dual carriageway, southbound between Topp Way and Raikes Lane. 

An eyewitness described seeing two stationary cars within the police road block. 

She said: "There were police cars everywhere and a closure in place. 

"In the area that was closed off, there were two cars, one which has its front end bashed in. 

"There also appeared to be a man being taken away on a stretcher".

Transport for Greater Manchester warned of long delays around the town centre, while the incident was dealth with. 

They tweeted: "Due to a police incident, St Peter's Way in Bolton is currently closed southbound between Topp Way and Manchester Road.

"Long delays are being reported throughout the town centre."

Diverted traffic caused further congestion on Turton Road, Folds Road, Bury New Road, Bradford Street, Lower Bridgeman Street and Manchester Road.

St Peter's Way reopened at around 2.30pm.
