A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy whose life was saved by Bolton Mountain Rescue Team (BMRT) volunteers visited the team’s base to meet the people who saved him.
Edward Clough was just 22-months-old when he went into cardiac arrest at the Barlow Fun Day, at Edgworth Cricket Club, in June 2018.
The cardiac arrest was unusually brought on by tonsillitis and Edward’s temperature rocketing to 41 degrees celsius.
Volunteers from the BMRT rushed to Edward’s aid and began to give him CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Edward was then taken to Royal Bolton Hospital where he made a full recovery.
A year on, Edward’s parents Dean and Sue returned to the Barlow Fun Day in the hope of meeting the volunteers and thank them in person.
Dean said: “We are from Hull but Sue and I are part of a group called 5th Legion who dress up and raise money for charity, and that’s the reason we were at the event.
“Everything from that day is a blur but they said Edward had stopped breathing and had no pulse so it was explained to us that he was essentially dead at one point.
“This year we said we would have to go back and see them. Edward actually went up to Mark Scott, one of the volunteers who helped him, and gave him a high five, which brought Mark to tears.”
BMRT then invited the family up to visit their base at Ladybridge Hall. Emergency services vehicle fanatic Edward got a chance to sit in the Mountain Rescue Landrover and in one of the team’s rescue boats.
He was also given a mountain rescue teddy bear which he named Mark, after the volunteer.
Dean added: “He had an absolutely amazing day. Mark was brought to tears again when Edward pointed at the teddy and called it Mark.
“He’s now had his tonsils removed and he’s come on so much since the operation. He’s doing great now.
“Sue and I can’t thank Bolton Mountain Rescue enough, we can’t put into words how much we appreciate what they did that day.
“We don’t know what we would have done without them.”
A spokesman for BMRT said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the family to our base and it was a joyous and heart-warming occasion. We wish them well for the future.”
