WITH Wimbledon starting next week week, we take a timely look back at the sport in Bolton.
Facing the camera on the first photo are members of Astley and Tyldesley Tennis Club looking resplendent in their whites in 1970.
Britain’s number one player in 1973, Roger Taylor, can be seen giving some advice to Bolton hopefuls Martin Robinson and Christine Dunn at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in photo 2.
And (photo 3) a charity tennis tournament was held at the courts of Bolton School in 1971.
As traditional as strawberries and cream is the British weather. Fortunately there was plenty of shelter for spectators and players at a Bolton Charity tournament in July 1970 (photo 4).
The look of delight on the faces of members of the Markland Hill Lawn Tennis Club says it all (photo 5). In September 1972, they won the silver rose bowl for winning the Lancashire County Club Championship.
According to Jim Cochrane, (photo 6) pictured with Martin Robinson and Christine Dunn, of Lostock Tennis Club, the North West was producing a number of players with world class potential in 1973.Bolton-born Mr Cochrane was a Lancashire representatives on the Lawn Tennis Association.
