FRASER Jardine and Callum Short were both winners in a successful start to the Red Rose Cross Country League for Bolton Harriers.

Short, the UK's number one for his age over 1500m last summer, completely dominated the Under-13s boys race at Blackburn's Witton Park. Clear in second place was Short's team-mate, Jonathan Kay, as the duo led Harriers to team victory.

Jardine was also a comfortable winner, finishing 10 seconds clear of his Blackburn rival. This laid the foundations for another Harriers team victory, with Liam Short in fourth and Rob Ashworth 11th completing a narrow one-point victory over Rossendale.

The u13s girls team also won easily, with Catherine Jones, Georgia Taylor-Green and Emma Wiggans finishing third, fifth and sixth.

Zac Thompson was fifth in the u15s boys race, as was Leah Peploe in the u13s girls race. Alex Chadwick ran well to finish fifth in the u20s, while John Ward and Eric Ranicar took the top two spots in the over-50s veterans category.

Tony Valentine chose to miss the cross-country and compete instead in the Liverpool 10k road race. Valentine ran well to equal his personal best time of 33-19 for seventh place in a huge field of more than 3,000 runners. The race was won by Altrincham's England international, Andy Norman.
