Detective Sergeant Craig Wallace, of GMP’s Bolton Borough, said: “This is a brutal and vicious attack which has left a man seriously injured in hospital and our thoughts remain with him and his family at this incredibly difficult time.
“I want to reassure the local community that we are doing everything we can to piece together exactly what happened and trace those responsible for this senseless crime.
“I would urge anyone with any information, no matter how big or small they think it might be, to please get in touch with police.”
Mr Robinson was attacked on Wednesday at about 12.25am.
Police officers were called to reports of a man that had been stabbed in Spinning Meadow, Bolton.
As Mr Robinson had been walking along the cul-de-sac he was approached and chased by a group of six men.
The men, wielding machetes, stabbed Mr Robinson several times before kicking him as he lay on the ground.
Mr Robinson had injuries to his head and body and remains in a serious condition.
An eyewitness told The Bolton News she had seen the gang surround a man and begin hitting him with what looked like hockey sticks with something attached to the end, explaining that they had come running on to Spinning Meadow from a cut-through to Chorley Old Road.
Describing the horrific events, she said: “There was screaming and shouting that just kept on going and crunching on the floor because of ice.
“There were 6 or 7 men and they had hockey sticks and they were just beating this one guy up.
“One (of the men) was just not going. He kept on hitting him.
“There was a big pool of blood and he was beaten really badly.”
A cordon was up in Chorley Old Road and a white crime scene tent was erected in Spinning Meadow. No arrests have been made and enquiries are still ongoing.
