A FAMILY are appealing for the return of their parrot which for the past 12 years has helped keep the memory of a little boy alive.

The African Grey bird, called Rocky, escaped its home in Hartington Road, in Heaton, at 7pm on Sunday.

The much-loved parrot would often be heard saying the name of Jaffer Javid, who tragically died at the age of just eight.

The much-loved son and brother drowned in a lodge off Blackshaw Lane lodge in 2000 while out playing with friends. The area was a popular meeting place for youngsters in the summer.

The heartbroken family, who say they miss the youngster every day, say hearing the parrot say his name brings them some comfort.

Now his owners, the Javid family, are offering a reward for any information leading to it being brought back to its home. They are worried the bird will be vulnerable in the wild.

Nasser Javid, Jaffer's brother, said: "The parrot has never escaped before, he flew out of the front door.

"He was in the room flying and as my mum tried to direct him to the cage he flew off.

"We went out after him and could not see him. He will be vulnerable outside."

He added: "We just really want to get him back home and are appealing for people to keep an eye out for him and get in touch in they see him.

"My mum taught him to say the name of Jaffer, and the parrot says it often.

"We were devastated when my brother died.

"We will give a reward to whoever can help us get him back."

Yesterday the family were out giving out flyers appealing for information and searching for Rocky, including visiting Queen's Park and other areas.
