A BOLTON MP has suggested that the drug Spice should be reclassified as a class A substance.
Chris Green, along with fellow Tory backbencher Kevin Foster, highlighted the drug’s existing class B categorisation in Parliament, saying more needed to be done to tackle its sale.
The so-called ‘zombie drug’, a synthetic substance that mimics the effects of cannabis, was previously deemed a legal high but there have been growing warnings about it.
Bolton West MP Mr Green said: “There is a particular problem at the moment with the increase in the use of the drug Spice.
“That comes so cheap, so readily available, it has such an impact on people, and more must be done by the police to crack down on the sale of Spice, which does so much damage to people.”
Intervening, Torbay MP Mr Foster said: “Would he agree that one issue with it is the fact it’s actually categorised as class B rather than class A, despite its impact?”
Mr Green replied: “The right characterisation and therefore the right approach by the police follows naturally from it.
“So it takes a very clear suggestion it ought to be re-characterised as a class A drug and get the appropriate response from the law enforcement agencies.”
