THE fight to save Harvey Nursery was taken to The Labour Party Conference.

Campaigners presented Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn with a letter opposing Bolton Council’s proposal to shut the popular nursery.

Town Hall chiefs have put forward controversial plans to shut the nursery at the end of the academic year. They say the nursery has an annual deficit of almost £68,000 which, says Bolton Council, is likely to increase with each year it stays open.

Bolton Trade Union Council has vowed to fight the proposals. The letter addressed to Mr Corbyn and delivered by Andrea Egan, Unison’s assistant branch secretary.

It states: “Bolton TUC unanimously resolved at its delegate meeting, to seek your personal advice on a matter of great concern.”

It adds: “The Harvey Nursery serves some of the most deprived families in Bolton, and was recently described as “good with outstanding features” in an OFSTED report. It’s closure will impact on children, parents and dedicated professionals in ways that will have implications both educational and social now and in the future, and therefore makes no sense economically either. The amount of money involved is paltry for such a precious resource. We strive to persuade people that we are for the many and not the few.”
