YOU could be forgiven for thinking these happy holiday makers are enjoying a break in the Lake District or another popular holiday spot in the North West.
But this was, in fact, Barrow Bridge right here in Bolton during the Second World War.
The picture was taken in April, 1945, and day trippers were enjoying a picnic on the many picnic benches that used to be in Barrow Bridge.
They have clearly brought their flasks and sandwiches for the special day out.
It is incredible to see just how many people would head for the little village of Barrow Bridge, particularly at the weekend, to enjoy the many attractions it used to have.
The boating lake, which has now been filled in, was hugely popular with families as were the many little “tea shops” that popped up in the front gardens of the little cottages where enterprising owners decided it would be an idea to bring in little tables and chairs and charge for cream teas on their lawns. We know many of our readers enjoyed a day out in Barrow Bridge at a time when going abroad was just a dream.
