WE felt this was an incredibly atmospheric photograph of a Bolton town centre street we have all walked down.
It is hard to imagine it filled with the sort of vehicles we see here and the public transport that used to travel around not only the town centre but throughout the town’s many outlying districts.
It is, of course, Deansgate at the junction with Bradshawgate and we can see the road was covered in setts or cobbles — we are unsure which these are. The busy road is surprising as this was 1934 and you would imagine very few people would have cars at this time.
Clearly the vehicles would have belonged to the privileged families of that time who would have been heading in and out of Bolton either to do their shopping or to work.
At this time would it be Whitehead’s on the right hand side or another store?
What other famous stores or buildings were here in Deansgate which appeared to be the hub of all the action in the town? Contact Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
