A MAN attacked his mother after getting drunk on homemade wine and lager.
Bolton Crown Court heard that Lee Beatty repeatedly punched his 65-year-old mum on July 7, the culmination of years of abuse by him at her Great Lever home.
After spending 10 weeks in prison awaiting sentence for causing actual bodily harm and using controlling and coercive behaviour the Honorary Recorder of Bolton Judge Timothy Clayson sentenced him to eight months in jail, suspended for 12 months.
"Your abuse of alcohol lies behind a significant part, if not all, of this behaviour," Judge Clayson told 35-year-old Beatty, who had pleaded guilty to committing the offences.
"You may be one of those people for whom alcohol is just a no-go area.
"This was nasty, aggressive, controlling behaviour, showing no respect for your mother."
The court had previously heard how Beatty, of no fixed address, had lived with his mother but began to drink heavily after the death of his father four years ago.
He would become aggressive towards his mother, regularly smashing up televisions and furniture when drinking, although until 12 months ago he was was not violent towards her.
Judge Clayson was told how, from summer last year he repeatedly punched, kicked or bit her.
His mum did not report the abuse to police until the July 7.
Three days earlier drunken Beatty had dragged her from her bed and bit her nose after he thought she had hidden some alcohol from him.
She later told police that her son had assaulted her or damaged something every week.
On July 7 Beatty's mum saw cans of lager under her living room table and, realising he had been binge drinking, advised him not to drink any more.
But Beatty reacted furiously, grabbing her and hurling her around the kitchen before throwing her to the floor and punching her repeatedly in the back of the head.
He also smashed up items in the kitchen and threw a blender and fruit bowl at her.
When she tried to call the police he grabbed the phone from her and began hitting her again and grabbing her by the throat while she tried to protect herself.
The mother, who suffered bruised arms and lumps and bumps to her head, fled the house to a neighbour, who alerted the police.
When officers arrived Beatty told her the "shut up" as she tried to explain to them what had happened.
After his arrest Beatty told police that he had lost his way since his father died and admitted that before the latest assault on his mother he had drunk one and a half litres of homemade wine plus 10 cans of lager.
He accepted he had assaulted his mum but claimed he had blacked out and could not remember the details.
In court Beatty, who has no previous convictions, was made subject to a restraining order banning him from contacting his mother for a year.
He must also participate in 30 days of rehabilitation activities and undergo treatment for alcohol addiction for six months.
"If you commit yourself fully I think there is a good prospect for you," Judge Clayson told him, adding that he hopes, in future, that Beatty will re-establish a relationship with his mum.
