WITH Newport Street currently undergoing a facelift, we decided to dig out some historic snaps of the thoroughfare.
Readers of a certain age will remember the shops glimpsed in these pictures, but were you among the hundreds who turned out to see Bolton’s first set of traffic lights get switched on, at the junction of Newport Street and Great Moor Street in the 1950s?
Another interesting shot is taken from the roof of Holy Trinity Church in 1969.
And there’s a chance to marvel at the incongruous sign that once adorned the building occupied by Home Bargains, which read both‘buy tripe’ and ‘snack bar’.
