A POLICE investigation has been launched after reports a young woman was raped in the town centre.
Newport Arcade was cordoned off this morning with officers at the scene.
Police say they received a report, on Thursday, that a 19-year-old had been raped on Wednesday.
The victim is now receiving specialist support and inquiries are ongoing.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police attended the victim’s address and specially trained officers are now supporting a 19-year-old woman.
“A cordon is in place on Newport Street as part of police enquiries.
“Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1247 of 14/09/17, or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
