MYSTERY still surrounds the death of a 25-year-old man who was found dead on his bedroom floor by his mother.

An inquest heard that a pathologist has been unable to find the cause of Alex Bullworthy's death.

Mr Bullworthy, a warehouse worker and fruit and vegetable wholesaler Oliver Kay, was described as being fit and healthy but his body was found by his mother when she returned to their home in Marld Crescent, Johnson Fold on April 23.

The inquest in Bolton heard that Mr Bullworthy had been out to the cinema with his friend, Jason Smith, the previous evening.

After returning home he fell asleep on the sofa whilst watching television before his mother, Cath McAvoy, woke him to tell him to go to bed.

Ms McAvoy told assistant coroner Timothy Brennand that she went to work the next morning but when her son did not reply to her texts she contacted Mr Smith, who went round to the house.

When he could get no reply after knocking on the door, shouting through the letter box and throwing stones at the window Ms McAvoy went home to find her son lying face down in his bedroom.

Paramedics were called but Mr Bullworthy was pronounced dead at the house at 6.59pm.

Ms McAvoy told the court her son was a happy-go-lucky man with a large number of friends.

“He was a wonderful son, brother and friend to many. His sad and untimely death has devastated everyone,” she said.

The court heard that Mr Bullworthy had a lump on his head since birth, had complained about headaches and was taking paracetamol on a regular basis.

But while pathologist Dr Emil Salmo reported that traces of paracetamol were in his body, there was no evidence that it was linked to his death.

Traces of cannabis in Mr Bullworthy's system and two bottles of lager he had drunk the night before his death were also ruled out as contributory causes.

Mr Brennand recorded an open conclusion, adding that the cause of death could not be ascertained.

He said: “Alex was 25 years of age, he was hard working and somebody who enjoyed life to the full. He was somebody who was capable of working hard and playing hard socially with his friends.

“He will, in every other respect, be remembered as somebody in his mid-20s who had the rest of his life to look forward to. Sadly, that life was cut short when he was found dead at his address on 23 April.”
