TO Angela Kelleway her boyfriend really is a hero.

For her partner, Andy Jones, ran into a burning house to save her father who had been overcome by fumes.

So intense was the smoke, Mr Jones, aged 30, was forced to crawl along the floor to find Paul Kelleway.

Miss Kelleway, aged 23, a cake-maker and decorator, said: “He says anyone would have done the same, and doesn’t think he is a hero.

“But I very proud of him.

“I just froze, I was in shock, my dad was in there.”

The house fire broke out in Glaister Lane in Breightmet on Tuesday at 2.30pm after a pan had been left on the cooker.

Neighbours heard the smoke alarm go off and ran to alert his daughter and her boyfriend who live on the same street.

Mr Jones, who works as a labourer, broke down the door to get to him.

He said: “I looked in the window and couldn’t see anything because of the smoke.

“I broke down the front door and because the smoke was so overwhelming I crawled into the living room and kitchen because I didn’t know where he was.

“When I found him, he was in and out of it but I managed to drag him out.

“I was lucky I was able to get in there, because a couple more minutes it could have been a different story.

“It was instinct and adrenaline I went in there, I would have done it for anyone."

Both were taken to hospital with Mr Jones, who works as a labourer, was released later the same day, and Mr Kelleway is still in hospital, but is expected to be okay.

Miss Kelleway said: “I was panicking – if Andy hadn’t be there.

“I would say to people to get rid of their chip pan, my dad grew up with chip pans and for him it is always been done that way, but they are not safe.”

Cllt David Acton, Chairman of the Fire Committee said: 2Chip pans are incredibly dangerous and the occupier of this house had a lucky escape – this could have been a far more serious incident.
