A MAN was handed a suspended sentence for stealing more than £100 from a town centre shop and assaulting a security guard.

Nasar Nabi, aged 27 and of Crescent Road, stole the items from Debenhams, in The Market Place, on June 10 this year.

He admitted the offence as well as assaulting Anthony Young by beating.

He was handed a four week prison sentence for the theft and a 12 week sentence for the assault, to be served concurrently and suspended for 12 months.

Nabi was ordered to pay £100 in compensation and £85 in prosecution costs at Bolton Magistrates' Court.

He must also have treatment for drug dependency.
