HERE are two different views of Newport Street from two different years.
The top image is from 1965 and shows a dramatic difference from the street we know today.
The former Railway pub and other buildings seen on the right of the photograph are no longer there.
They made way for what is now the train station and the impressive new interchange. Also missing from the photograph is the Gateway bridge.
The second photograph depicting Newport Street from the other direction in 1971 shows more buildings which have also made way for the new interchange.
Edwin P Lees, an electrical store and a popular destination for record lovers was just about to open as the photograph was taken and just along from there was the well known furniture shop Proffitts.
Trinity church is still a recognisable view in the town as are many shops facing the interchange including Aults, Campcraft and The York Public House.
