A BIRD sanctuary that was threatened with closure has now been told it can stay open.
The owners of Every Feather Bird Rescue in Over Hulton were told by Bolton Council earlier this year that due to not having relevant planning permission, it could have to shut down all operations in October.
But following months of uncertainty, sisters Stephanie and Samantha Williams have been allowed to keep the centre in Newbrook Road open, much to their relief.
Stephanie said: "We can keep all the birds and we can keep the rescue open.
"It is brilliant news for us. We were so, so happy. We have been so exhausted so we are just responding to emergencies at the moment.
"We are trying to keep it slow so we can recover but we are just so relieved that it is all finally sorted and that we can keep going."
The council had previously told the sisters that the amount of bird-related activity within the house meant that the property would need permission to be a ‘mixed-used’ dwelling rather than just a home.
The pair founded Every Feather Bird Rescue, which is based at their house, after finding an injured pigeon five years ago.
It was initially set up as a charitable organisation to look after pigeons but after they were deluged with calls, the siblings decided to expand their services to take in any type of bird.
They have now set up three aviaries in their house and garden and last year they cared for 424 birds.
The pair have been spending £300 a month of their own money to run the charity.
A fundraising campaign has been started in an effort to purchase some land in the village where they can set up the aviaries.
Stephanie said: "We have got more than £1,000. If we can get a bit of land it would go a long way to get some more aviaries.
"The community has been so supportive. They have been bringing us flowers and sent letters to the council. It has been overwhelming."
A council spokesman said: "Discussions are ongoing with those involved and at this present time the premises does not require a change of use. Therefore, we are not currently seeking to take action.
