THERE were a number of momentous events in 1911 — the coronation of George V and Queen Mary at Westminster Abbey, London, the launching of the ocean liner RMS Titanic in Belfast and the birth of Winifred Burgoyne.

And on Tuesday the popular resident at Bakewells Rest Home celebrated her 106th birthday with a special party much to her delight.

Helen Morgan, owner and manager of the care home, said: "Wini, who was a weaver in her working life, celebrated yet another year with her friends and family at the Bakewells Care Home.

"Wini is an absolute superstar, she loves to chat and is still fully active and contributes to all aspects of life here at the Bakewells.

"She is a wonderful and inspirational lady and we are very privileged to have her living with us supported by her daughter Lynda and Grandson David. Here’s to many more birthdays."

Mrs Burgoyne worked as a weaver in a mill at the age of 14 for 12 shillings a week.

She married her husband Ronald, who was in the RAF. He sadly died in 2000.

Mrs Burgoyne gave up work to raise her daughter Linda Hardy, who was born two years after getting wed, before returning to work when she was 10.

She only moved into the care home in 2015.

Mrs Burgoyne wrote memoirs in her late 90s recollecting her experiences, and what she remembers of the two wars.

When asked on her 105th birthday the secret to a long and happy life, she said: "being a good girl".
