A BRANCH of the Royal British Legion are looking to purchase a defibrillator after a man nearly died when he collapsed during an event.

The incident in Astley Bridge Royal British Legion occurred earlier this month, when emergency services were called after a man who collapsed with suspected heart difficulties.

Two members carried out first aid on the man, using chest compressions, before paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to hospital and survived the ordeal.

Graham Wells, from the legion, said he is now recovering at home.

Mr Wells said: "The person collapsed on the night and we had two members who gave them first aid.

"They quite possibly saved his life. The ambulance came and the fire brigade came.

"The paramedics said thank you to the two people who carried out the first aid and told them that if it had not been for them, he would not be here.

"What we have decided to do is raise funds for the defibrillator in case something like this would happen again.

"Members have so fair raised £300 and on Saturday, September 9, they are having a fun day in the afternoon and all the funds will be going towards the defibrillator."

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are usually mounted on the walls of buildings and can be used by members of the public to save lives if anyone nearby goes into cardiac arrest.

The fun day at the club will include a raffle, with a range of prizes available to win.

It will take place at the Astley Bridge Royal British Legion club from 1pm until 5pm.
