The discovery of guns in a street has been labelled 'very worrying' by a councillor.

As reported, police were called to a disturbance in Sharman Street, Burnden, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

An investigation was launched and a large search was carried out yesterday in the street as well as at a house and in a nearby area of land.

Officers recovered a stolen car, firearms and ammunition after the operation, which involved crime scene investigators, dog units and armed special operations officers.

Responding to the incident, Cllr Mohammed Ayub, who represents Great Lever, said: "I have never heard of anything before, I have never heard of anything like this incident. It is a worrying thing to hear about in Great Lever. It is usually quite a safe area. We have problems with teenagers and anti-social behaviour but nothing more than that."

One Sharman Street resident said that it is usually peaceful down there.

When asked whether he knew of any issues with gangs in the area, Cllr Ayub said: "No. It was quite bad about five or six years ago. I think it has quietened down now.

"If you see anything suspicious report it to the police."

Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Officers have reassured people that they are working to catch those involved.

Anyone who heard the disturbance or has any information about the firearms, ammunition or the car is asked to contact police on 101 and quote incident number 777 of August 24 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
