GUNS, ammunition and a stolen car were recovered from the scene of a disturbance after a large police search operation.

Police were called to Sharman Street, Burnden, in the early hours of Wednesday to reports of a disturbance between groups of men.

A cordon was put in place in the street today and there was a heavy police presence throughout the day.

AS IT HAPPENED: Firearms found after police tape off street

A large search was carried out and firearms, ammunition and a stolen car were all recovered.

At its peak, about seven police vehicles were at the scene and a large number of officers were taking part in the search including a dog unit, armed specialist operations officers and crime scene investigators.

As well as searching the street, an area of land at the back of Sharman Street was also searched.

One house in particular was at the centre of heavy police activity as a tactical aid unit joined the search in the afternoon.

One resident said that his wife was at home at about 11am when police knocked on the door and told her not to leave the house.

He said: “On Tuesday night there was a disturbance.

“There were men in the street shouting.

“I have been told they are searching for some guns and a knife or something.

“It’s usually peaceful around here. I’m not sure what has gone on.”

The cordon was reduced at about 3pm and was eventually lifted at about 4.30pm, but a number of officers remained at the scene.

A car, which the resident said he had heard had been stolen, was also taken away from the scene this afternoon.

A number of items were taken away by crime scene investigators from the land at the back of the street.

Investigators wore overalls and masks while carrying out the search and took a number of photographs.

No arrests have been made and police have not received reports of any injuries.

Det Sgt Paul Quinn said: “I understand people in the community will be concerned as we have recovered firearms and ammunition, but I want to assure them that we have launched a full investigation and are working to catch those involved.

“If you heard the disturbance or have any information about the firearms or the car, please get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
